393.3064 Book Review on "The Age of Environmentalism" by Edward J. De Steiguer.
This book is a highly comprehensive and balanced look at the environmentalist movement and some of its key figures. Free of jargon and lingo, the book seeks to provide an introduction to the movement to provide the novice with a well-rounded and balanced view of the movement from the standpoint of its major contributors. The book appears to have been written to serve as a textbook for introductory classes on environmentalism and, because of its objectivity and comprehensive treatment of its subject matter, seems well suited for that purpose. 3 pgs. 0 f/c. 1b.

394.3112 Book Review: Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and the Human Condition.
Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" explores the meaning of human nature in a very profound way. She shows that human nature is to seek love and companionship, yet that society can turn people into very wicked people. At the same time, she stresses that human nature cannot be changed and that humans should not tinker with it or try to experiment with it. Mary Shelley touches on the theme of how dangerous it is to play with human nature. We see that humans are to be left alone and to be allowed to take their own way. 5 pgs. 2 f/c. 1b.

395.3140 The Notion of Utopia in Thomas Pynchon's "Vineland.
In his novel, "Vineland", Thomas Pynchon provides a notion of utopia that is embedded with ambiguity and contradiction. On the one hand, the plot appears to be very straightforward: radicals and potheads from the 1960s take up their cause in the 1980s to fight against authority. The 1970s and 1980s, in many respects, are seen as a fulfilment of their secret wishes. In other words, there is a certain duality in that the radicals of the 60s said that they wanted peace and equality, but what they really wanted was success and individualism -- which the 1970s and 1980s provided. 10 pgs. 5 f/c. 5b.

396.3168 Book Review: "Islam and Politics" by John Esposito.
Author John Esposito makes the important point that there is no monolithic quality in resurgent Islam, a fact which is demonstrated well by the doctrinal differences between Sunni and Shia Islam. The West applies an ethnocentric perspective of Islam, and portrays the religion and culture through its own values. Moreover, the West exploits the image of terrorists and tries to label the entire Islamic community with the terrorist brush. Notwithstanding this Western ignorance, however, the fact remains that Islamic revivalism is an attempt by Muslims to stop the Westernization of their own societies; it is not a militant or aggressive movement seeking to threaten the Western world. 9.5 pgs. 11 f/c. 1b.

397.3171 A Review of Cohen's "Discovering History in China".
Paul Cohen discusses the problem of how the assumptions upon which Americans have written Chinese history have simply been wrong. In many respects, this is the problem of Americans seeing everything through their own eyes, and not being able to understand that other countries have their own cultures and traditions -- as well as values. 6 pgs. 5 f/c. 1b.

399.3205 Book Review: Discovering History in China: American Historical Writing on the Recent Chinese Past.
The author of this book emphasizes that a China-centred history is necessary to get a better and more accurate portrayal of Chinese history. Indeed, in his perspective, this will counter-act the ethnocentric approach taken by American historians on the subject. One of the main theses of the book is that a China-centred approach is needed to counter-balance the American distortion of Chinese history. 6 pgs. 4 f/c. 1b.
